Debbie, a South Bucks Hospice Volunteer
We took a few minutes to talk to one of our new volunteers about some of the work they’ve been doing to support the hospice and why it’s been beneficial for both sides.
What appealed to you about those types of roles?
In my previous career I was used to a certain amount of social contact during the week and found that I was particularly missing that. So I wanted to find volunteering opportunities that would give me a sense of purpose whilst also using general office skills and giving me that social contact.
How’s it gone so far?
Really well. I’ve been volunteering on a Monday afternoon to help out with admin for the volunteer team and on a Wednesday afternoon, I cover the hospice reception. The mix of those two activities gives me exactly what I was looking for and I can honestly say that I’ve never worked anywhere else where I have felt so appreciated.
You’ve also done other volunteering haven’t you?
Yes. I heard that extra help was needed for one of the hospice’s fundraising events, a concert at Wycombe Abbey School. In particular, they needed people to work behind the bar serving drinks before the event and during the interval. Myself and another volunteer said we’d be willing to help out and I’m really glad we did. I know it was work, but to me it felt like an afternoon out. I really enjoyed serving people drinks and having a chat and a joke with customers and with the other people helping.
What advice would you give to anyone considering volunteering?
Find out about the different types of volunteer activities that are needed and do consider things that you wouldn’t naturally lean towards. You don’t have to commit to an activity on a regular weekly schedule, for example, event support is ad hoc. It’s also fun, social and volunteers are needed for different types of activities – from car park duty to manning the ticket desk or pouring drinks behind the bar. There’s something for everyone, regardless of confidence level, skill or prior experience!
How can people find out more?
Regular volunteer vacancies are listed on our website but we’d also like to build up a bank of people who’d be able to help on an ad hoc basis for events. To register interest, fill out the form here and someone will be in touch with you.
