An investment banker has raised more than £1,500 for South Bucks Hospice by walking 13 miles in the pouring rain in memory of his grandmother

Jonathan Edwards took part in the Rotary Maidenhead Bubble Boundary Walk on October 4 to support the charity which helped his ‘Nanna’ (grandmother) Rose Brown for more than 20 years.

Mrs Brown, from Holmer Green, passed away almost exactly a year ago in October 2019 aged 92. Jonathan believes the care South Bucks Hospice’s lymphoedema service provided over the years helped prolong her life.

He explained: “In 1995, Nanna had a deep vein thrombosis which was nearly fatal and received treatment on her leg at South Bucks Hospice for over 20 years. She was very well-known by hospice staff and, on her 90th birthday, insisted she didn’t want presents but wanted donations instead to go to the hospice. By completing this fundraising walk, I am glad to be continuing something for her.”

The Maidenhead Boundary walk is an annual charity event organised by the Rotary Clubs of Maidenhead and Maidenhead Bridge which usually takes place on the first Sunday in October and sees around 500 people register to walk the picturesque 13-mile route around the old boundary of Maidenhead. To avoid a mass gathering of people, this year the walk has been re-invented as a Maidenhead Bubble Boundary Walk and it can be done at any time during three weeks from Sunday, October 4 to Sunday, October 25 2020.

Jonathan, 40, has previously walked in aid of other charities, but this month’s event was particularly difficult due to the weather. “The rain didn’t stop, and I was left with some very nasty blisters,” he said.

He is delighted with the amount of money raised so far for the hospice but is hoping for even more.

He added: “I am keen to support the work the hospice does in her memory, as not only did it support her with its specialised lymphoedema service, it also offers a lot of other services. We miss Nanna very much – but I’m really chuffed to be walking in her memory.”

Jackie Ward, Acting Chief Executive at South Bucks Hospice, based at Butterfly House in High Wycombe, said: “We are thrilled that Jonathan has carried on his grandmother’s legacy of supporting our hospice. The lymphoedema service is an invaluable asset to us and the community. Lymphoedema , which is a chronic condition resulting in swelling in the body, can have a serious impact on a patient’s well-being. Our expert staff relieve the pain and swelling by various techniques which we know are highly effective.”
