Every volunteer who gives up their time to help us makes a vital contribution to our work in supporting patients with life-limiting illnesses.

I simply cannot stress the enormous value we gain at The South Bucks Community Hospice from the heroic efforts of our legions of volunteers who work in our shops or at the hospice itself.

Their commitment – be it in manning a reception desk, sorting goods or clearing a garage – saves us money which in turns enables us to provide the essential services and care to the people who so need our support.

And yet, while we have so many great volunteers, we always need more. Just last month, we saw the retirement of some of our most dedicated volunteers. The common theme from them, and from all our staff, is just how rewarding it is to volunteer.

So often I am told first-hand that they believe they get more out of it than they put in, and the feeling of helping the patients and improving their lives can be quite wonderful.

The beginning of June was National Volunteers’ Week. To celebrate this, I hope your readers – those who can spare the time – will think about volunteering and, if possible, give some of their precious time to helping our patients. I doubt you will ever regret it.
